THE DETAILS BEHIND YOUR PLAN
Study and application requirements
Open the topic that matters to you. Let’s work through your questions together.
A flexible degree structure
A US bachelor’s typically takes four years and combines major courses with broader study requirements. Compare curriculum, campus and academic support rather than rankings alone. Community-college transfer can be another route, but you should confirm which credits the receiving university will accept.
English and admission preparation
Prepare school records, any required English test and the documents specified by your chosen university. ASU, for example, requires English-proficiency evidence from international applicants, subject to its published options. Academic thresholds, accepted tests and any programme-specific requirements differ, so build your checklist around the exact course.
Fall and spring planning
Start dates vary by institution. ASU’s international first-year page lists 11 January 2027 as the spring start, with a 1 November 2026 priority application deadline. Treat this as one university’s example; graduate and other universities’ deadlines differ. Plan the visa timetable after checking your programme.
Understand the full annual cost
ASU’s 2026/27 international undergraduate estimate totals USD 69,906, including USD 39,062 base tuition and USD 18,819 housing/meals. It assumes 12 credits per semester and the highest college fee; its insurance estimate still uses 2025/26 rates. This is one university example, not a national price.
Scholarships and funding choices
Explore university merit awards and departmental funding alongside your admission application. ASU considers qualifying international undergraduates for its New American University scholarship; awards are limited. EducationUSA recommends early financial planning because aid is competitive. Compare the net cost only after you receive a written award.
Visa and arrival essentials
For an F-1 route, begin with admission to an SEVP-approved school and its Form I-20, then follow the SEVIS and visa steps. Requirements and availability depend on your circumstances and nationality. Use the university’s arrival and housing resources; admission does not itself grant a visa.
Student work and practical training
F-1 students generally have a 20-hour weekly on-campus work limit during teaching terms. Off-campus work needs the appropriate authorisation. Eligible graduates may apply for 12-month OPT; qualifying STEM degrees can support a further 24-month extension. Confirm course eligibility and employer conditions with the university’s international office.
Your questions, answered
Can I pay for my degree through an off-campus job?
Do not build your budget on unrestricted employment. F-1 work permission is limited, and off-campus work requires the correct authorisation. Prepare a funding plan before applying and ask the international student office about your individual work eligibility.
Does a two-year college guarantee transfer to a university?
No. Transfer is subject to the receiving university’s admission and credit-recognition rules. Check a written transfer agreement, required grades, accepted credits and remaining study costs before choosing this route.
